Warming Fire Cider Tonic
A vibrant tonic for the cooler months, packed with warming spices and immune-supporting ingredients. Fire Cider is a simple yet powerful way to boost vitality and keep seasonal bugs at bay. It’s easy to make at home and a beautiful ritual of self-care.
Ingredients:
- 5 cloves of garlic, peeled
- 1 piece fresh ginger, sliced (skin on)
- 1 thumb of turmeric, sliced (skin on)
- 3 chillies, chopped
- Zest and juice of 1 orange
- 500ml raw apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup (to taste)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary
- A few good turns of black pepper
Method:
1. Begin by preparing your ingredients. Peel the garlic, then slice the ginger and turmeric (no need to peel). Chop the chillies, and zest and juice the orange.
2. Place the garlic, ginger, turmeric, chillies, and orange zest into a clean 1-litre clip-top jar. Pour the cider vinegar over these ingredients, and stir well to combine.
3. To this mixture, add the honey (or maple syrup), cinnamon stick, rosemary, and the juice from the orange. Lastly, grind in a few generous turns of black pepper for extra warmth and depth.
4. Ensure all ingredients are fully submerged in the vinegar. Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark spot.
5. Allow your fire cider to infuse for at least 5 days; however, waiting a few weeks will yield even more potent flavours. When ready, you can strain out the solids or leave them in and simply spoon out the liquid as you use it.
6. Fire Cider can be stored in the fridge for up to 6 months, offering a warm, spicy boost when you need it most. Take a tablespoon, take as is or add to hot or cld water for a drink.
