Calm Amidst the Storm - A Free Online Yoga Class & Resources

We had Storm Eowyn today and it inspired me to host a short practice and info on the Air element and the Vayus.

I hope this sees you grounded for the day and a deeper understanding of the winds (vayus) within and without.

A little on the Air element and Vayus:

One of the five elements: air - a force of lightness, clarity, and movement. Throughout history, the air element has been revered and woven into myths, stories, and deities.

In ancient Greece, the four wind gods governed the north, south, east, and west, carrying the seasons as they moved across the year and seasons. In Hindu tradition, Vayu, the deity of winds and breath, was known for his exceptional beauty, gliding noisily across the skies on his radiant chariot.

While we cannot see air or wind, their influence is undeniable. These invisible forces shape the natural world and carry a powerful, unseen energy.

Within our bodies, this energy is mirrored in the subtle winds known as the Vayus. These energetic currents, described in yogic texts, guide our physical and emotional functions, emphasising the importance of their balance and flow.

- Udana Vayu: Governs upward and outward movements such as speaking, singing, exhaling, and thinking.

- Prana Vayu: The subtle life-force energy circulating around the heart and lungs.

- Samana Vayu: Supports digestion and assimilation at the body's centre.

- Vyana Vayu: Permeates the entire body, enabling flow and connection.

- Apana Vayu: Directs downward energy for grounding, elimination.

Despite being unseen, the air element holds deep sacred meaning, symbolising communication, breath, and life itself. By exploring how air interacts with our senses, we can connect more fully to this essential element, helping us to feel present and attuned to the world around us.
